SENEGA
Polygala senega
Perennial Uses: medicinal Sow No:13
(Senega snakeroot) One of the most highly valued herbs among the First Nations people and early European settlers of North America. In 18th century Europe the root was considered the most powerful antiphlogistic herb known. Members of the Seneca tribe and others relied on it to treat rattlesnake bites, nasal congestion and headache. In modern American and European herbal medicine, the root is used to treat respiratory ailments such as bronchitis, asthma, and whooping cough. It is especially known for its ability to stimulate the coughing up of excess mucus and reducing wheezing in the chest, and is very useful for chronic pneumonia. Can irritate if too much is consumed, causing nausea, diarrhea, or sometimes vomiting. Raising this herb from seed is not for the neophyte: seed germination requires exposure to cold and rarely exceeds 40%, and seedlings are slow and difficult to establish. But is very hardy, to at least zone 3, and tolerates dry conditions well in full or partial sun. Roots are harvested after four years. Ht. 45cm/18in.
