From Tibet, the "Roof of the World," where this splendid purple- or wine-flowered poppy can be found at elevations up to 7000 m (19000 ft). Root, used in Tibetan medicine, has narcotic properties. This is a challenge to the most accomplished of gardeners; needs deep, well-drained soil in a partly shaded location protected from summer heat and strong winds.
