Infusion of the dried tops is recommended for dropsy as well as bladder and kidney diseases. Restores normal rhythm to feeble, irregular heartbeat but large doses cause respiratory paralysis. Said to be psychoactive; a related species is used by Yaqui Indians as a hallucinogen. Not recommended in the Pacific Northwest where it has become invasive.
